India’s Gen Z are driving up a mega boom in its beauty market

India's beauty market is growing rapidly, driven in large part by young consumers from Generation Z, and its homegrown brands are attracting rising interest from global investors.

Shoppers in their teens and twenties are spending more on skincare, cosmetics and personal care, often discovering products through social media and online marketplaces.

Industry analysts say this generation is more willing to experiment, compare ingredients and switch brands than older consumers. Many also place a high value on brands that are transparent about ingredients and reflect their values.

“Young Indians want products that feel made for them, not adapted from somewhere else and simply relabelled.”

A wave of direct-to-consumer start-ups has emerged to meet that demand, offering products tailored to Indian skin tones, climates and budgets.

“Young Indians want products that feel made for them, not adapted from somewhere else,” said one consumer goods analyst.

International investors and established multinational groups have taken note, backing local brands or taking stakes in fast-growing labels.

Rising incomes, wider internet access and rapid delivery services in large cities have all helped extend the market beyond traditional beauty counters. Online platforms have made it far easier for niche brands to reach customers across the country.

Influencers and content creators have become central to how brands are marketed, with short videos and tutorials often driving sales more effectively than traditional advertising. Smaller towns are becoming an important source of new customers.

Some observers caution that competition is fierce and that not every new brand will survive once early investment slows.

Even so, the sector's growth is expected to continue as more young consumers enter the workforce and spend on personal care.
