Abuse from Liverpool fans hurts – Alexander-Arnold says in press-conference

Trent Alexander-Arnold has said he still hopes for 'a degree of understanding' from Liverpool supporters after revealing that he continues to receive abuse.

Speaking at a press conference, the defender acknowledged that the criticism had affected him, describing it as hurtful given his long association with the club.

He came through Liverpool's academy and became one of the most recognisable players of his generation at Anfield, winning major honours during his time there.

His departure divided opinion among some sections of the fanbase, with reaction on social media at times turning hostile.

“Disagreement is part of football, but nobody should have to put up with personal abuse simply for doing their job.”

Alexander-Arnold indicated that he respected supporters' right to feel disappointed, but hoped the tone of the debate could change over time.

Players' representatives and anti-discrimination campaigners have repeatedly raised concerns about the volume of abuse aimed at footballers online, calling on social media platforms to act more quickly.

Clubs and governing bodies have introduced reporting systems and, in some cases, worked with police to identify those responsible for the most serious messages.

Many supporters responded to his comments with messages of goodwill, while others maintained their frustration over the way his exit unfolded.

Football authorities have said tackling online abuse remains a priority, and several high-profile players have spoken in recent seasons about the toll it can take on their mental health and their families. Campaigners argue that clearer consequences for offenders are needed if behaviour is to change.

The defender is expected to continue focusing on his football as the season progresses, with several important fixtures on the horizon.
