Community Tree Planting Day

Community Tree Planting Day

About This Event

Help us plant 500 native trees along the greenway corridor at Greenway Park. Tools, saplings, gloves and training are all provided — no experience needed, and by the second tree you will feel like you have done it before.

The species mix is all native: oak, rowan, hazel, birch and hawthorn, chosen with the parks team to rebuild the wildlife corridor between the park and the river. Every tree is tagged and monitored, and the survival rate is published each spring.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need any experience?

None at all. The 9:00 AM demonstration covers everything, and there is a team leader with every group for the whole session.

From about age 8 with an adult. Children usually do best at the nursery station preparing saplings, which is level ground and out of the way of the spades.

We plant in the rain — the saplings prefer it, frankly. Only high winds or frozen ground would postpone us, and we would post here and email by 7:00 AM.

The parks team waters and monitors them for three years. Every tree is tagged, and we publish the survival rate each spring.
